Def Leppard Sucks part 2
(ok, "sucks" is a bit harsh...but at least I got your attention)
To everone who responded to my original posting on 4/30/2008 "Def Leppard Sucks" (feel free to go back for a read) I give you PROOF from Joe Elliott himself that they DID lip sync on "Dancing With the Stars"........
DEF LEPPARD: Don't Lump Them In (audio)(Posted 3:00 AM, 7/23/2008)
Don't lump Def Leppard in with the so-called "hair bands" of the '80s -- Poison, Cinderella, Great White, Ratt, etcetera. Speaking at a press conference for a Swedish music festival, singer Joe Elliott says, "We were never driven to do the mascara thing or whatever these bands did. They didn't have any substance musically, I don't think, in comparison to us, so we didn't feel we needed to do it." His comments were relayed to Poison's Brett Michaels, who responded by saying he is a fan of Def Leppard, but poked fun at them for lip-syncing on Dancing With the Stars. Poison drummer Rikki Rockett said Def Leppard in concert is a "pre-programmed, Mutt Lange live record."
Elliott responded by saying, "Brett has a point -- we did lip-synch on Dancing With the Stars, a show they'd love to be on, no doubt... When I said a lot of those Hollywood bands weren't 'real' [what I meant was] I was born Joseph Elliott, Sav was born Richard Savage, Rick was born Richard Allen, Phil was born Philip Collen, Viv was born Vivian Campbell and Steve was born Stephen Clark. I don't think anyone in Poison uses their real name, do they? And I could name hundreds of others who don't, but Poison came to mind because I was asked about them! It's nothing personal, it was just an answer to a question." As for Rockett's comment, Elliott says, "Well, he's welcome to come see us anytime he wants... Obviously not used to hearing a good band very often then, is he?"
In closing, a post on Def Leppard's website says, "Pease be aware that this is all light-hearted banter, with no serious insult intended."
Def Leppard is back in North America July 30th in Texas. --Sal Cirrincione

Erin,
Please go back and read your previous blog and comments yourself...because NO ONE who responded to you denied that DL lip synched on Dancing With The Stars. Even those who believe Def Leppard can do no wrong acknowledged from day one that they lipped on that show. And believe me, many of us die hard fans who DO believe they can do wrong from time to time were no happier than you were when we saw the show that night. The difference is, afterward, we stepped back and thought about why they had done it, and we realized that they had valid reasons...whereas you went on the air and on your blog the next day and said that what they had done was unforgiveable and inexcusable. The reason people gave you a hard time about it was not because they disagreed that lipping had occurred...but because they didn't feel you were being fair to DL by leaving out the "why" part to your listeners/readers. (Well, and then, if I recall correctly, you made a comment accusing them of lip synching or using backing tapes during live concerts as well, which they absolutely DO NOT do, EVER).
DL only lip on tv shows a) when the show requires their artists to do so, b) when, as Joe said in his recent comment, there are restrictions for the show's artists that make doing the live performance not work, and/or c) he is really, really sick.
And believe me, both Joe and Phil were really, really sick. I spoke to both of them a few days before they got sick, and they were just fine...and then a friend of mine spoke to them backstage the night before the illness fully took hold. She said that not only was Joe having trouble singing during the show...but afterward he could barely even speak, was coughing so hard he was literally in tears, and had to excuse himself and leave the friends he had invited back there because he felt so awful. And again, this was before it fully hit him the following day. Malvin (their tour manager) wrote the fans a letter describing just how bad it was in the days that followed...if you want to read it, let me know, I think I have it saved somewhere. The show goes on for DL unless it ABSOLUTELY cannot be done, and the fact that six shows had to be postponed (which they never do) means it was really bad.
He had not recovered by the time they were on DWTS...it took him over a month to recover. But you went on air and told thousands and thousands of listeners about it, in a way that made it seem as if DL had done something really horrible, something they had WANTED to do as opposed to something they felt they HAD to do. That was the issue many of us had...that you weren't giving your listeners the full/correct story, and that they were getting the wrong idea about the band.
Now, as far as the Bret thing is concerned...we die hards have learned that Joe has a tendency to speak his mind without thinking about how it might come across to others, often resulting in foot-in-mouth moments. We don't necessarily like it, but we're used to it. I won't excuse him for his initial comments. I don't disagree with him completely (although I do like Poison and Crue's music), but I think he chose the wrong place/time/words to get his point across, and I don't think he should have named any specific bands (a general statement would have done it). In fairness to Joe, though, the reporter who later asked Bret about it kind took what Joe said out of context, and I don't think the point Joe made was conveyed correctly. Of course, Bret bringing up DWTS was a cheap shot, his claim that he has never lip synched himself is an outright lie, and Rikki's response to Joe on his myspace blog was completely childish. So I kind of think all three of them were being idiots here.
Sorry this is so long...but when you claimed to have been proven right about them lipping, and no one ever said you were wrong about that in the first place, I felt I had to explain the thoughts of myself and many others in the DL fanbase. You probably still don't think they had valid reasons for doing what they did...but thanks for reading anyway. I think you're great, and I love your show...I just don't think you've been 100% fair to Def Leppard with regard to these two situations.
Thank you Marni!
The Def Leppard community thank you for reporting the honest truth with clarity and intelligence, you are very much appreciated.
Don't DJ's need knowledge about bands to actually have the job they do? Seems like your lacking in that department big time ms. Carman.
Erin, what will it take for you to peal your lazy ass out of your chair and go see them live, to prove to you once and for all that they don't lip synch at all live?
btw, everyone knows they lip synched on DWTS. Kinda funny you didn't post the section of Joe's response with him explaining why.
Sorry Erin, your accusations have no air whatsoever.
Oh, and thanks for referencing me on the air today babe.
here are some cold hard fact..
First, DWTS requires bands who play loud to lip sync..Second Joe E. was stricken ill, and was unable to sing anyway..
Not sure what one lip sync performance has to do with anything...Jesus Christ they been around for 30 years..im sure they Lip Synced on more then one show in thier career...
If u think other bands who play on these shows arent lip syncing, your on crack sweetheart.
And I need to know why...why are we still talking about this spat between him and "choke choke..poison"
Christ this is old news as well..
Puke Puke..
Joe Elliott has a big mouth, he can be an arrogant son of a bitch, and rubs lots the wrong way..
So what..
You have still not proved a single point here..
Im sorry you wated such time writing this shit..
It was a big waste of both our times..
peace Out..
The internet is full of haters. Erin still RULES!
